Meet the Coach Behind Forged Grit Monthly

I’m Dr. Matt. PhD in pathology. Former biotech scientist. But none of that means shit without grit.

I started ultrarunning in 1998 at 17—because asthma was trying to choke the life out of me, and I wasn’t about to let it win. Since then, I’ve been waging war on weakness. Adventure races. Ironmans. Pain became the proving ground.

In 2015, a car wreck shattered my pelvis and cracked my skull with a traumatic brain injury. Three months later, I crossed the finish line of an Olympic triathlon. No shortcuts. Just suffering, structure, and a choice to keep showing up.

I found powerlifting in 2017. Built strength to match the engine. Then four years ago, the real fight started—an unknown disease hit me with daily paraesthesia and near blackouts. Most people would tap out. I doubled down. I’m training to run 200 miles again—not because it’s smart, but because that’s what forged grit demands.

🔹 Beginner Workouts: 45-60 minutes—perfect for building a strong foundation.

🔹 Intermediate Workouts: Around 2 hours—pushing your limits with more volume and intensity.

🔹 Advanced Workouts: Up to 3 hours—full send. Strength, endurance, and absolute control over your body.

🔹 Beginner: Just the basics—dumbbells, a kettlebell, a jump rope, and a place to run.

🔹 Intermediate: You may need additional gear like a plyo box, barbell, sled, or sandbag, but you can select workouts based on what you have.

🔹 Advanced: More equipment is recommended, but the focus is on raw strength, endurance, and mental grit—adapt and overcome.

All you need is a floor, a pull-up bar, and the will to suffer. The program is designed to progress with you—bodyweight to barbells, minimal gear to full setup. Your garage is the proving ground. No crowds. No mirrors. Just you and the work.

Forged Grit is broken into three progressive phases: Recruit, Warrior, and Legendary.
(Beginner): 4 days/week. Two days of strength, plyometrics, skill work, and MetCon. One steady-state cardio day. One progression day that builds toward a monthly challenge. By the end of this phase, you'll be training 5 days/week.
(Intermediate): 6 days/week. Four intense days with strength, skills, plyo, and longer MetCons. One cardio day. One challenge prep day.
(Advanced): All-out warfare. Same structure as Warrior, but heavier, faster, longer. More strength volume, more plyo, and MetCons that blur the line between training and survival.
